Soon, you find yourself in Sootopolis Bay with many other grunts, where both God General Zev Harcourt and Beast mint frost are selecting recruits for the day. [break][break]

General Harcourt is definitely the more serious of the two, and you'd likely gain valuable combat experience by his side. However, his bond with Necrozma is terrifying and otherworldly—how much assistance can he provide when the threat of death looms so large? [break][break]

Beast Neon remains as cheerful as ever, but his recent acquisition of Galarian Articuno has made him slightly more unstable. Is he as reliable as you believe? [break][break]

Among the new recruits prowls a dog. His amber eyes look over each of them. He wonders what stories play inside their minds. Some come for glory. Some come for riches. Some come for a higher cause. He knows what Rocket is, knows the cost and the frighteningly high stakes for which they play. His eyes finally settle on one recruit.[break][break]
This one is young. Too young, just like he was too young, once upon a time. In Rocket’s new world order, the young act as the young acted in a time before humans planted their colony called civilization. They kill, or they are in turn killed. They hate, or they become the hated. They feast upon the marrow of the slain, and are better for the kill.[break][break]
“Yo, new kid.” A name he calls every new Rocket he meets. There’s something jovial about his voice, juvenile even. Though he is ten years the other’s senior, he is shorter and speaks in a light, yapping voice. Only his clothes and the sword at his side mark him as the dangerous thing he truly is. Perched on his right shoulder is an armband reading S.P.E.C.T.R.A.[break][break]
“You oughtta go with the general.” There’s something knowing in the dog’s voice. “He’ll train ya right.”

They turned to the voice speaking to them with bright eyes. This is the kind of scenario that should cause anxiety, but they know they're on the right path, and they are unshaken by the admittedly terrifying conditions of facing off with someone titled God General. "Thanks for the recommendation!" Their voice is a pleasant chime in a grim atmosphere, but they become aware of it and adjust to a more stoic disposition. "Nothing like learning from the best, yeah?"[break][break]

They are excited to learn. She is not excited to witness Necrozma, who feels like the most unnatural deity - or just very strong pokemon; she isn't sure her Hoyeon family members have clearly defined the so-called legendary pokemon that fit outside of their creation stories. "Are you coming along, too?" She eyes the SPECTRA denotation but doesn't ask, yet. They get the impression that too many questions is a bad thing.

The cold voice of Kanto's Black Hand greets you as you and others split off towards his direction. There's something grave yet unsettling in his tone, sending a shiver down your spine. You try to reassure yourself that it's unrelated to the black crystals running up and down his arms. [break][break]

Surely, General Harcourt wouldn't harm one of his own, would he? [break][break]

"Do as I say, and I will forge you into a weapon worthy of Rocket," he states, almost as if he can read your mind. [break][break]

You can't help but wonder — [break][break]

What happens if you defy him? [break][break]

As the other grunts disperse into smaller groups, you face the choice: stay with God General Harcourt or join the others training under Rocket's own Charlatan.

“Wouldn’t miss it.” He wouldn’t. Though the dog is no beast, he is still an important piece of chess on the God General’s board. He serves as an excellent aid when training new people and helping stress upon them the importance of their work here in Rocket. Some part of the dog’s soul aches for what his junior will experience, but it’s all part of growing up. Rocket’s the big leagues. None of this small ball criminal stuff.[break][break]
They’re offered an alternative – the Charlatan and his Tapu Koko. Tapu Koko, though nowhere near as glorious as some things Rocket has on offer, is in fact a bona fide god. It would make a good distraction but the dog decides sticking with the general is the best move.[break][break]

He grinned at Hitoshi's question and chirped, "a few days!" But it was only to lighten the heavy mood. "I've got a few months under my belt," she said more seriously, "but some of the formalities have only happened recently like my formal recruitment with Tempest Quinn." Hell of a guy to choose for the job, too, since they were both Hoyeon. It felt like a good sign to have someone inside that was, in a roundabout way, her family.[break][break]

Some of the grunts around them had dispersed to another group after Zev offered to turn them into weapons. They weren't sure about being likened to an object, but strength was necessary for what was coming. She didn't want to be someone who had things happen to them. She couldn't accept the passivity any longer. [break][break]

"Let's go be weapons, yeah?" She nudged him with a demeanor too pleasant for the setting.

You are ushered into a room by God General Harcourt, where there is nothing else in the room except a steel chair. Shortly after, two grunts drag in a stranger whom you don't recognize. They secure him to the chair and silence him with a gag. [break][break]

"Your training today will determine this man's fate." [break][break]

"He is either a Rocket prisoner, accused of collaborating with and serving under PENELOPE LIVY." [break][break]

"Or he is a grunt, caught trying to sell counterfeit Regice-themed merchandise to Admin Fox." [break][break]

“Uhuh.” Skepticism tints the word, but they are soon ushered towards their task. The dog knew what was coming. He himself had gone through this with the god general before. Rather than stepping up and killing the man at once, the dog instead hovers back. This is the New Kid’s moment.[break][break]
“Few days or a few months, here’s yer first test.” The dog says with the severity due a life hanging in the balance “Either he’s a numbnut who tried sellin’ some fake shit, or he’s a traitor. Their life’s in yer hands, new kid. Whatcha gonna do?”[break][break]
Their prisoner, though blindfolded, looks up at them. They breathe heavily. His eyes were not gagged. He knows that death comes for him. Like all who titter on the edge of the gallows, his breathing grows heavy. The brain processes its doom.[break][break]
The choice is theirs.

Clover's put down countless wooloo, miltank, and gogoat. They've also killed attacking vespiqueen and raticate. And, once, they put down a thief's fuecoco. Killing pokemon is no big deal. People? [break][break]

They had stabbed the thief. It was bad - blood spilled quickly, from the gut - but her mom had triaged the thief with the help of her pokemon. Their Sachem had taken the thief into town to be arrested. Presumably. Clover wasn't sure, but she'd been assured she wouldn't get into any legal trouble. The thief had tried to take her baby brother; there had been no thought in her head at the sight of the strange man holding him. [break][break]

Now, there were thoughts. Thoughts of Hoenn on its final legs. Hoenn commanding the presence of so many legendary pokemon because it was going to turn to sludge and ash and waste like Kanto if someone didn't stop it. If someone didn't summon Earth Mother and Nature's Giants to protect the environment of Hoenn. Clover was determined to make it happen, and one life in the grand scheme of things was justification enough. She felt, too, that this scenario only had one correct answer. She accepted the knife, aware Hitoshi was assessing her just like the god general. [break][break]

She does not believe in cruelty for the sake of it. She stands behind him and cuts the sides and front of his throat, hitting the major arteries but remaining out of any spray from the initial contact. The sound is ugly, as he tries to cry out in the first moment, but it's not the most painful cut. He bleeds quickly, thoroughly. She doesn't take her eyes off of him. It feels disrespectful to not gave his spirit space to return to the earth where it belongs. From mud to blood, blood to mud.

Grabbing the blade that is offered in his hand, you step forward. Whether you do so ruthlessly or with caution, eventually, the man slumps in your grip. Blood pools into the floor. [break][break]

“Not bad.” In the bottom of his heart is such profound sadness, all bottled up, hidden behind a stiff upper lip. Many in Rocket think him some cold killer, a reflection of their God General. The dog envies their leader and the coldness of distant stars. He knows humans bleed. They bleed warm. They bleed hot.[break][break]
Zev Harcourt might have thought less of their recruit, should they have hesitated, but the dog would not. It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man. All it takes is a fatal flaw in the system and everything shuts down. Warmth turns to cold, and with it the end of consciousness, the end of everything they were or will be. Life departs the traitor’s eyes. The man deserved to die. He betrayed their pack. That which makes the pack weak cannot be suffered to live.[break][break]
But it is still a terrible thing to force someone to do for the first time. As the recruit is praised by their general, the dog places a hand on the young one’s shoulder. This was a test. They passed, and on their head be the consequences.[break][break]
“There’s a few places that’re quicker. They had time to think. You don’t wanna give ‘em that. I’ll show ya on some dummies. Here.” He passes the youth whiskey.
